Magnetic transitions in the 1D chain compounds NdPd<sub>5</sub>Ge<sub>3</sub> and NdPt<sub>5</sub>Ge<sub>3</sub>

We present the structural and initial magnetic characterization of previously unreported materials NdPd5Ge3 NdPd5Ge3. These materials, with 1-dimensional Nd chains, crystallize in orthorhombic YNi5Si3-type structure space group Pnma. Magnetic ordering is observed for both compounds at ~ 2.2 K 3.0 NdPt5Ge3. A magnetic-field-induced transition clearly below 2K, an applied field around 1.6 Tesla. The heat capacity data reveals that essentially all available entropy released but only 29% seen NdPt5Ge3 temperatures down to 1.5 K, implying a second can be expected lower temperatures.

Elucidation of slow magnetic relaxation in a ferromagnetic 1D dysprosium chain through magnetic dilution.

A novel ferromagnetic 1D dysprosium chain was synthesized. It exhibits slow magnetic relaxation, originating from the single-ion behaviour of Dy(3+) as indicated by dc and ac magnetic data of both diluted and un-diluted samples.
